4 American English
•• American English / British English
Reader’s Digest Success With Words: Oscar Wilde’s Description of Britain and America as “two great nations divided by a common language” contains truth as well as wit They have never had much trouble understanding each other, but they have a long history of being irritated with each other. The words and accent are disgusting, and there can be no doubt that such films are an evil influence on our language. The reasons for American English being different than English English are simple: As an independent nation, our honor requires us to have a system of our own, in language as well as government. – ... The King’s English is not the King’s. It is a joint stock company, and Americans own most of the shares.
статью foreign words and phrases).
•• В английской парламентской практике to table a proposal – то же, что submit т.е.
Time: White has rebounded and is now believed to be running neck and neck with his rival. Financial Times: Yesterday John Hume, the Northern Irish nationalist leader, decided after weeks of prevarication not to stand.
•• administration брит. government. В США слово government (см. статью government, governance) относят ко всем ветвям власти, к государству вообще, в Великобритании, как у нас, к правительству в смысле кабинета министров;
•• apartment брит. flat. В США слово flat тоже встречается, но обычно употребляется в отношении плохих, дешевых квартир;
•• bill брит. note (в значении банкнота);
•• check брит. bill. Имеется в виду чек, который приносит клиенту официант в ресторане;
•• closet брит. cupboard. В США встроенный шкаф называется built-in closet, а walk-in closet – это кладовка, темная комната для одежды. Правда, слово closet, употребляемое как прилагательное в значении тайный, скрывающий свое истинное лицо, распространено и в США, и в Англии (closet liberal, closet homosexual);
•• drunk driving (встречается также drinking and driving) брит. drink driving. Совершенно непонятно, почему в двух «братских странах» существует это небольшое, но существенное различие в обозначении этого «кое-где у них порой» встречающегося явления. Не берусь судить, кто прав, тем более что я не автомобилист (кстати, по обе стороны океана автомобилист чаще всего – motorist). Англичане говорят также drink drivers: Government advertisements are aimed at putting off drink drivers (Skynews). – Государство проводит в СМИ кампанию с целью убедить водителей не садиться за руль в нетрезвом состоянии. В США имеется The National Commission Against Drunk Driving, а само это явление обозначается часто сокращениями DUI (Driving under the influence) или DWI (Driving while intoxicated): DWI is a serious offense in New Jersey. Сокращение может употребляться как существительное: Being arrested for a DUI can be an unnerving experience (сайт www.bktlaw.com). – Арест за управление автомобилем в нетрезвом состоянии/состоянии опьянения может превратиться для вас в большую нервотрепку. (Кстати, юристы отмечают, что drunk driving, DUI и DWI не являются строгими юридическими терминами. Точнее – impaired driving, т.е. управление автомобилем при содержании алкоголя в крови (blood alcohol concentration – BAC) от 0,08 процента.) В соответствующей русской терминологии тоже часто используются сокращения: управление т/с (транспортным средством) в НС (нетрезвом состоянии);
•• garbage брит. rubbish;
•• garbage can брит. dustbin. Соответственно, американский garbage man – это английский dustman. Кстати, у англичан есть выражение dustbin of history (свалка истории), что «по-американски» звучит иначе – ash heap of history;
•• gas, gasoline брит. petrol. Во избежание путаницы американцы называют газ natural gas;
•• in брит. of. Переводчику на английский язык надо иметь в виду, что у американцев и англичан сохраняются «принципиальные разногласия» по поводу некоторых предлогов. Наверное, самое заметное из них: американцы говорят participants in a conference, англичане – participants of a conference;
•• installment plan брит. hire purchase (покупка в кредит);
•• license plate брит. number plate. По-русски номерной знак или просто номер (на автомобиле);
•• liquor store брит. off-license. Винно-водочный магазин. Несколько странное английское название означает, что магазин имеет лицензию продавать спиртное (амер. liquor, брит. [ wines and] spirits) «на вынос» – to be consumed off the premises;
•• mail брит. post. Но почтовое отделение в обеих странах называется post office;
•• nervy – в американском словоупотреблении имеет значение наглый (someone who has a lot of nerve). Англичанин скорее всего скажет impudent;
•• orchestra seats (в театре) брит. stalls;
•• pants брит. trousers. У англичан pants – трусы (амер. underpants или shorts);
•• pantyhose брит. tights;
•• parka брит. anorak;
•• recess брит. break. Значение этого слова – перерыв. Американцы говорят break о кратком перерыве (coffee break; we’ll take a short break for a commercial announcement) и о каникулах в школах и университетах (spring break). В остальных случаях – recess (в школе; ударение на первом слоге), intermission (на концерте) или даже interruption;
•• station wagon брит. estate car. «Волгу» такого типа у нас в свое время называли «волга-сарай». Вместо этого устаревшего и чисто разговорного «термина» сейчас предлагается «универсал»;
•• subway брит. underground;
•• teller (в банке) брит. cashier;
•• truck брит. lorry;
Where is the toilet/lavatory? Where is the bathroom/restroom/men’s room/ladies’ room. – comfort stations.

е. the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Соединённое Королевство Великобритании и Северной Ирландии). Англия — королевство; Уэльс — княжество (отсюда the Prince of Wales — это Чарльз); Шотландия — страна; Северная Ирландия — провинция, состоящая из шести графств (the Six Counties). Не удивляйтесь, когда на вопрос 'Are you English?' получаете гордый ответ 'No, I'm Welsh/Scottish/ Northern Irish или даже Cornish (из Корнуолла)'. -

13 Bulleid, Oliver Vaughan Snell
[br]b. 19 September 1882 Invercargill, New Zealandd. 25 April 1970 Malta[br]New Zealand (naturalized British) locomotive engineer noted for original experimental work in the 1940s and 1950s.[br]Bulleid's father died in 1889 and mother and son returned to the UK from New Zealand; Bulleid himself became a premium apprentice under H.A. Ivatt at Doncaster Works, Great Northern Railway (GNR). After working in France and for the Board of Trade, Bulleid returned to the GNR in 1912 as Personal Assistant to Chief Mechanical Engineer H.N. Gresley. After a break for war service, he returned as Assistant to Gresley on the latter's appointment as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London \& North Eastern Railway in 1923. He was closely associated with Gresley during the late 1920s and early 1930s.In 1937 Bulleid was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway (SR). Concentration of resources on electrification had left the Southern short of up-to-date steam locomotives, which Bulleid proceeded to provide. His first design, the "Merchant Navy" class 4–6– 2, appeared in 1941 with chain-driven valve gear enclosed in an oil-bath, and other novel features. A powerful "austerity" 0−6−0 appeared in 1942, shorn of all inessentials to meet wartime conditions, and a mixed-traffic 4−6−2 in 1945. All were largely successful.Under Bulleid's supervision, three large, mixed-traffic, electric locomotives were built for the Southern's 660 volt DC system and incorporated flywheel-driven generators to overcome the problem of interruptions in the live rail. Three main-line diesel-electric locomotives were completed after nationalization of the SR in 1948. All were carried on bogies, as was Bulleid's last steam locomotive design for the SR, the "Leader" class 0−6−6−0 originally intended to meet a requirement for a large, passenger tank locomotive. The first was completed after nationalization of the SR, but the project never went beyond trials. Marginally more successful was a double-deck, electric, suburban, multiple-unit train completed in 1949, with alternate high and low compartments to increase train capacity but not length. The main disadvantage was the slow entry and exit by passengers, and the type was not perpetuated, although the prototype train ran in service until 1971.In 1951 Bulleid moved to Coras Iompair Éireann, the Irish national transport undertaking, as Chief Mechanical Engineer. There he initiated a large-scale plan for dieselization of the railway system in 1953, the first such plan in the British Isles. Simultaneously he developed, with limited success, a steam locomotive intended to burn peat briquettes: to burn peat, the only native fuel, had been a long-unfulfilled ambition of railway engineers in Ireland. Bulleid retired in 1958.[br]BibliographyBulleid took out six patents between 1941 and 1956, covering inter alia valve gear, boilers, brake apparatus and wagon underframes.Further ReadingH.A.V.Bulleid, 1977, Bulleid of the Southern, Shepperton: Ian Allan (a good biography written by the subject's son).C.Fryer, 1990, Experiments with Steam, Wellingborough: Patrick Stephens (provides details of the austerity 0–6–0, the "Leader" locomotive and the peat-burning locomotive: see Chs 19, 20 and 21 respectively).PJGRBiographical history of technology > Bulleid, Oliver Vaughan Snell

14 Martin, Sir James
SUBJECT AREA: Aerospace[br]b. 1893 Co. Down, Northern Irelandd. 5 January 1981 England[br]Irish military aircraft engineer, inventor of the ejector seat.[br]Martin acquired a general knowledge of engineering as an industrial worker in Belfast. In 1929 he established the Martin Aircraft Company, which was merged five years later with another concern to form the Martin-Baker Aircraft Company at Denham, Buckinghamshire. They became known for designing and constructing efficient, lightweight military aircraft, and Martin supervised personally every aspect of the work of his factory. During the Second World War they developed a number of aircraft weapons, including an explosive device carried on a bomber's wings for cutting the cables of barrage balloons, the flat-feed system for the 20 mm Hispano cannon used on British fighter planes and the twelve-gun pack mounted in the nose of the Havoc night fighter. Martin began devising means of rapid escape from a disabled fighter plane. First came a quick-release canopy for the Spitfire, followed by an improved form sliding on guides set in the fuselage. Then came the Martin-Baker seat, which ejected the pilot from his plane by an explosive charge. Ground tests were made to determine the rates of acceleration that could be tolerated by the pilot, and the first test in the air with a pilot took place in July 1946 at a speed of 320 mph (515 km/h) and an altitude of 8,000 ft (2,400 m). Its first use in a genuine emergency was in May 1949.After the Second World War, the firm specialized in making components, particularly the ejector seat, rather than complete aircraft. The higher speeds and altitudes of supersonic jet aircraft made it necessary to modify the ejector seat: a device to hold the pilot's legs together, to prevent their being broken, was incorporated. In addition, with the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Martin developed a face blind to prevent skin damage at low temperatures. Another modification was to allow the seat to fall freely for the first 10,000 ft (3,000 m) to enable the pilot to reach breathable air more quickly; in October 1959 a successful demonstration took place at 1,250 mph (2,000 km/h) and 40,000 ft (12,000 m) altitude. During the inventor's lifetime, it is estimated that his ejector seat saved the lives of some 4,700 airmen.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1965. Barbour Air Safety Award 1958. 15 Thomson, James
SUBJECT AREA: Mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic engineering[br]b. 16 February 1822 Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland)d. 8 May 1892 Glasgow, Scotland[br]Irish civil engineer noted for his work in hydraulics and for his design of the "Vortex" turbine.[br]James Thomson was a pupil in several civil-engineering offices, but the nature of the work was beyond his physical capacity and from 1843 onwards he devoted himself to theoretical studies. Hhe first concentrated on the problems associated with the expansion of liquids when they reach their freezing point: water is one such example. He continued this work with his younger brother, Lord Kelvin (see Thomson, Sir William).After experimentation with a "feathered" paddle wheel as a young man, he turned his attention to water power. In 1850 he made his first patent application, "Hydraulic machinery and steam engines": this patent became his "Vortex" turbine design. He settled in Belfast, the home of the MacAdam-Fourneyron turbine, in 1851, and as a civil engineer became the Resident Engineer to the Belfast Water Commissioners in 1853. In 1857 he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering and Surveying at Queen's College, Belfast.Whilst it is understood that he made his first turbine models in Belfast, he came to an arrangement with the Williamson Brothers of Kendal to make his turbine. In 1856 Williamsons produced their first turbine to Thomson's design and drawings. This was the Vortex Williamson Number 1, which produced 5 hp (3.7 kW) under a fall of 31 ft (9.4 m) on a 9 in. (23 cm) diameter supply. The rotor of this turbine ran in a horizontal plane. For several years the Williamson catalogue described their Vortex turbine as "designed by Professor James Thomson".Thomson continued with his study of hydraulics and water flow both at Queen's College, Belfast, and, later, at Glasgow University, where he became Professor in 1873, succeeding Macquorn Rankine, another famous engineer. At Glasgow, James Thomson studied the flow in rivers and the effects of erosion on river beds. He was also an authority on geological formations such as the development of the basalt structure of the Giant's Causeway, north of Belfast.James Thomson was an extremely active engineer and a very profound teacher of civil engineering. [br]b. 26 June 1824 Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland)d. 17 December 1907 Largs, Scotland[br]Irish physicist and inventor who contributed to submarine telegraphy and instrumentation.[br]After education at Glasgow University and Peterhouse, Cambridge, a period of study in France gave Thomson an interest in experimental work and instrumentation. He became Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow in 1846 and retained the position for the rest of his career, establishing the first teaching laboratory in Britain.Among his many contributions to science and engineering was his concept, introduced in 1848, of an "absolute" zero of temperature. Following on from the work of Joule, his investigations into the nature of heat led to the first successful liquefaction of gases such as hydrogen and helium, and later to the science of low-temperature physics.Cable telegraphy gave an impetus to the scientific measurement of electrical quantities, and for many years Thomson was a member of the British Association Committee formed in 1861 to consider electrical standards and to develop units; these are still in use. Thomson first became Scientific Adviser to the Atlantic Telegraph Company in 1857, sailing on the Agamemnon and Great Eastern during the cable-laying expeditions. He invented a mirror galvanometer and more importantly the siphon recorder, which, used as a very sensitive telegraph receiver, provided a permanent record of signals. He also laid down the design parameters of long submarine cables and discovered that the conductivity of copper was greatly affected by its purity. A major part of the success of the Atlantic cable in 1866 was due to Thomson, who received a knighthood for his contribution.Other instruments he designed included a quadrant electrostatic voltmeter to measure high voltages, and his "multi-cellular" instrument for low voltages. They could be used on alternating or direct current and were free from temperature errors. His balances for precision current measurement were widely used in standardizing laboratories.Thomson was a prolific writer of scientific papers on subjects across the whole spectrum of physics; between 1855 and 1866 he published some 110 papers, with a total during his life of over 600. In 1892 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Kelvin of Largs. By the time of his death he was looked upon as the "father" of British physics, but despite his outstanding achievements his later years were spent resisting change and progress.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1866. 17 Perry, John
SUBJECT AREA: Mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic engineering[br]b. 14 February 1850 Garvagh, Co. Londonderry, Ireland (now Northern Ireland)d. 4 August 1920 London, England[br]Irish engineer, mathematician and technical-education pioneer.[br]Educated at Queens College, Belfast, Perry became Physics Master at Clifton College in 1870 until 1874. This was followed by a brief period of study under Sir William Thomson in Glasgow. He was then appointed Professor of Engineering at the Imperial College of Japan in Tokyo, where he formed a remarkable research partnership with W.E. Ayrton. On his return to England he became Professor of Engineering and Mathematics at City and Guilds College, Finsbury. Perry was the co-inventor with Ayrton of many electrical measuring instruments between 1880 and 1890, including an energy meter incorporating pendulum clocks and the first practicable portable ammeter and voltmeter, the latter being extensively used until superseded by instruments of greater accuracy. An optical indicator for high-speed steam engines was among Perry's many patents. Having made a notable contribution to education, particularly in the teaching of mathematics, he turned his attention in the latter period of his life to the improvement of the gyrostatic compass.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFRS 1885.
